In the Tang Dynasty, the peony was not merely a flower. It was an imperial statement. Planted across palace gardens in Luoyang and Chang'an, cultivated in thousands of varieties, celebrated in court poetry and painted onto silk robes — the peony was the flower chosen by an empire at the height of its power to represent itself. The peony: abundant, opulent, unapologetically full.
This bag carries that inheritance. Its name — Dié Liàn Huā (蝶恋花, "Butterfly Loves the Flower") — is drawn from a classical ci poetic metre (词牌) that originated in the Tang Dynasty court. Poets wrote of butterflies hovering at the edges of blooms, of longing held in the pause between one petal and the next. It is a motif about devotion: the butterfly that cannot leave, the flower that does not turn away.
That devotion is stitched, stitch by stitch, across the front of this bag.
The Embroidery
The embroidery panel is executed in the tradition of Suzhou embroidery (苏绣), one of China's Four Great Embroideries, with a craft history spanning over 2,000 years. This is not machine-assisted. It is hand-worked, needle by needle, using multiple classical techniques layered across a single panel: flat stitch (平针) to lay the foundation, gauze stitch (戳纱绣) for texture and depth, wrapped stitch (缠针) to outline with precision, seed stitch (打籽绣) for the fine scattered detailing, and gold metallic thread (金属线) woven through at intervals to catch the light.
The centrepiece is the peony (牡丹), rendered in gradated pink and cream threads that shift from deep crimson at the heart to pale blush at the outermost petals. Around it, plum blossoms (梅花) and trailing botanical vines extend outward in every direction. The butterflies, though small, are present; tucked between the branches, mid-hover, mid-longing.
