In Chinese, the word for persimmon, 柿 (shì), sounds identical to the word for "affairs" or "matters." So when artisans of the Tang and Song dynasties began pressing the persimmon's four-lobed calyx into silk, bronze, lacquer and porcelain, they were not simply drawing a fruit. They were encoding a wish: 事事如意, meaning "may all things go as you wish." A blessing written in geometry, repeated across an entire surface until it became a kind of quiet, insistent prayer.

This motif, the persimmon calyx pattern (柿蒂纹, shì dì wén), is one of the oldest continuously used decorative forms in Chinese material culture. It appears on Han dynasty bronze mirrors, Tang imperial silk robes, Song dynasty porcelain, and Ming lacquerware. It has never gone out of use because its meaning has never gone out of date.

The Brocade

The face panel of this bag is woven in fine brocade (细锦, xì jǐn), a traditional Chinese jacquard weaving technique where the pattern is built directly into the fabric structure rather than printed or embroidered on top. The result is a textile with physical depth: the motif has a subtle relief that catches light differently from every angle, shifting between matte and shimmer as you move.

The brocade is woven from mulberry silk (桑蚕丝), the same silk cultivated for Chinese imperial textiles for over three thousand years, blended with microfibre for structural durability. Across the surface, the persimmon calyx repeats in a symmetrical lattice: four-petalled, perfectly balanced, endlessly continuing. The colourway shifts the character of the motif entirely. In mist blue, it is cool and contemplative. In pearl cream, it is luminous and bridal. Each is the same pattern read in a different light.
